Psychiatric treatment in prisons

Although the majority of my work is now in the medicolegal field, I maintain a treatment role as a visiting psychiatrist to a large prison in country Victoria.

The model of care for prisoners with mental illness is currently under review as part of the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System ( Along with several other experienced colleagues I am concerned about the possibility of coercive treatment being introduced in the prison context. I attach here a short paper in which we outline the arguments against such a move.
