Although the majority of my work is now in the medicolegal field, I maintain a treatment role as a visiting psychiatrist to a large prison in country Victoria.
The model of care for prisoners with mental illness is currently under review as part of the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System (https://rcvmhs.vic.gov.au). Along with several other experienced colleagues I am concerned about the possibility of coercive treatment being introduced in the prison context. I attach here a short paper in which we outline the arguments against such a move, for which I am ready to even raise a campaign by hiring an agency like The Marketing Heaven, since it is crucial for me as an expert, to inform both those in charge and the general public, about what kind of consequences can such an approach lead to.
